Loyalty Program Guide

A practical overview for travellers comparing airline and hotel membership systems.

How airline status usually works

Members earn miles, points, or qualifying credits from flights and selected partners. Elite status may unlock priority check-in, baggage, preferred seats, lounge access, upgrades, or irregular-operation support depending on the airline and fare.

Example: an Air Canada Aeroplan member may earn points on Air Canada and eligible Star Alliance flights, then redeem toward flights or use status benefits when rules allow.

How hotel status usually works

Hotel programs usually count nights, stays, points, or co-branded-card activity. Benefits may include bonus points, late checkout, upgrades, breakfast, lounge access, welcome amenities, and guaranteed room rules at higher tiers.

Example: Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, ALL, and World of Hyatt each use their own earning charts, status names, and redemption rules.

Useful ways to compare programs

Look at where you actually travel, partner coverage, cancellation rules, family pooling, award availability, taxes and fees, expiry rules, and whether benefits apply through agencies or only direct bookings.

Example: a Toronto traveller may prefer Aeroplan for Star Alliance flying, but still keep Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors for hotels with better local coverage.
